Accreditation of Degree Programs
The system of accreditation was implemented in Germany on the part of the German Rectors' Conference within the framework of the Bologna Process which aims at creating a collective European space for higher education. The system is designed to secure the quality of academics and teaching acccording to collective European standards. The process of accrediation is completed by an agency for accreditation. At the end of this process, the Accrediation Council awards their seal of approval to the respective degree program.
German universities are either accredited through 'system accreditation' (this form of accreditation reviews the universities' own quality assurance systems) or 'program accreditation' (this form of accreditation controls the quality of each degree program).
A university with a 'system accreditation' is permitted to organize and accredit its own degree programs, which leads to greater responsiblity of these universities.
The Freie Universität Berlin successfully completed the process of 'system accreditation' in August of 2016. For more detailed inofrmation on quality management and system accreditation, visit this page.
