Unique ancient architectural ensemble uncovered during excavations in Agrigento (Sicily)
News from Apr 09, 2025
An international team of researchers led by Prof. Dr. Monika Trümper and Dr. Thomas Lappi from the Institute of Classical Archaeology has made two extraordinary discoveries in Agrigento, Italy, on the southwest coast of Sicily. During excavations in March 2025, they uncovered an ancient lecture hall that offers unique insights into the education of young citizens in the ancient city. This lecture hall, part of an impressive gymnasium, demonstrates the importance of intellectual training alongside physical education. Another remarkable find are two inscription blocks that reveal fascinating details about the social life of the city at that time. The ancient ensemble uncovered by the researchers is the only known of its kind in the western Mediterranean.
