Past perception of time and past economy of long distance trade: The Indian Ocean and its globalizing network
PhD abstract: This research investigates the ceramics that travelled within the context of the trade connections that developed across the Indian Ocean from the 3 rd c . BC E until the 5 th c. CE. In particular, the focus of attention is on the ceramics from the site of Khor Rori in the governorate of Dhofar in the south of modern days Oman. The objective of the study is to develop a better understanding of the distribution of specific ceramic typologies across the Indian Ocean to better understand the dire ctions followed by the trading routes and bette r understand the economic and cultural impact of such trade network. A morphological approach coupled with fabric comparisons and, where possible, archaeometric data confrontations will be applied to the study of pottery assemblages from the Khor Rori archaeological site and other sites across the western Indian Ocean. The final objective of the comparisons is to identify ceramics that share morphological features as well as fabric compositions The ceramics i dentifi ed as similar in different sites are , then, subjected to a quantification anal ysis to deepened the ec onomic and cul tural impact that the imported materials could had in the different sites considered
