The influence of the Syrian storm god on the representation of Jupiter Dolichenus in the Roman period
The storm god was one of the most important deities in the pantheon of the Near East. He was worshiped for his ability to promote of fertility and his formidable strength. The storm god was particularly revered in societies that depended on agriculture; whose existence was dependent on rainfall.
The main aim of this research is to study how Jupiter Dolichenus was influenced by the iconography of the Syrian storm god and the continuity of cultural tradition among civilizations by studying and analyzing samples from Africa, Asia, and Europe dating back to the third millennium BC until the third century AD.
Also, this research will compare the iconographical features of Jupiter Dolichenus and the Syrian storm god in the Bronze and Iron Ages. And highlight their shared characteristics and explore how their fusion impacted Roman religious practices. The study will involve analyzing historical records, inscriptions, archaeological findings, and scholarly works related to these deities. Various artistic representations of the deities, including sculptures, reliefs, coins, seals, and other visual media, whether official or popular, will also be examined.
The PhD project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Dominik Bonatz.
