The talk is based on an exhibition called Echo at Jenkins-Johnson Gallery on Ocean Ave, Brooklyn, New York, in July 2022. The talk will expand on the logistics of bringing works by African and Afro-Caribbean artists to the United States; as well as the curatorial thesis of the exhibition which rests on the idea of Echo as a figure of classical Greek literature that can illuminate the role of listening, and by doing so, it will center acts of listening and/or loitering as ways of engaging in the production and thinking on art. It will offer a re-reading of Narcissus and Echo through the artwork of self-taught artists such as Nadia Huggins and Mona Taha.
