Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Cultures

Ancient Oriental Studies is a focus of the Master's program History and Cultures of Ancient Near East. It is designed as an integrated and consecutive course of study. Students deepen their knowledge of ancient Near Eastern languages and examine the sources with regard to research problems of the tradition.

Arabic Studies

Look behind the clichés of the Orient of deserts, camels, veils, oil and the Thousand and One Nights and not only learn more about the Quran as a literary text, but also get excited about classical and modern Arabic literature. The focus is on Arabic literature and a look at the cultural and intellectual history of the Arabic-speaking world - and not just the history of knowledge, but also philosophy, magic, alchemy, medicine and astronomy.

Archaeology of Ancient Western Asia

The master degree program in History and Cultures of Ancient Western Asia with a focus on Archaeology of Ancient West Asia provides students with in-depth specialized knowledge in Near Eastern Archaeology, mastery of scientific working methods, and sufficient analytical competence for independent scientific research and teaching.

Art History: Africa

The master degree program provides in-depth scientific knowledge of the art and visual culture of Africa and the African diaspora. Historically, the focus is on the period from the 15th century to the present, with isolated examples from earlier periods also being covered.

Art History: East Asia

The course program provides knowledge of works of art from the cultures of China, Korea, and Japan from the Neolithic period to the present.

Art History: Europe & America

The Master degree program in Art History in a Global Context, with a focus on Europe and the Americas, provides a cross-genre comparison of historical and contemporary art of different cultures, especially architecture, painting and sculpture/plastic, design, printmaking, film, photography, garden art, installation, textile art, new media, fashion, performance, drawing, and image productions of science, information, and everyday culture.

Chinese Studies

In its research and teaching, the Master degree program in Chinese Studies seeks to grasp its subject matter with the methods and theories elaborated in the social sciences of sociology, economics, political science, history, geography, anthropology, jurisprudence, as well as in linguistics and the humanities, whose relevance to the language or society of China must be examined.

Classical Archaeology

The MA Classical Archaeology provides in-depth and extended specialist knowledge. Emphasis is placed on teaching visual and media skills as well as skills in dealing with a fragmentary monumental tradition and its historical classification, acquisition of basic knowledge in current theories of cultural studies (media and interaction theories, gender studies, spatial analysis, ritual studies, theories of identity construction, acculturation, cultural contact, postcolonial theory).

Egyptology

The consecutive, more research-oriented master degree program builds on a bachelor's degree in Egyptology, Oriental Studies, or Ancient Studies and deepens and expands specialized and methodological knowledge in the field of Egyptology.

Historical Studies

The MA History at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute is a research-oriented program and presents the subject in temporal, spatial and methodological breadth. Students have the opportunity to become acquainted with topics and tendencies of historical research across epochs and to form their own focus in the process.

History for Teacher

The Master degree program provides essential skills beyond the basic qualifications acquired in the Bachelor's program in History with regard to the role of graduates as experts in specialized teaching.

Islam and Middle Eastern Studies

The Master degree program in Islam and Middle Eastern Studies provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of history, politics and law of the modern Islamic world, the history of ideas of the Islamic-influenced world, Islam in Europe and in South and Southeast Asia.

Japanese Studies

The subject of the Master degree program is the in-depth study of modern Japan, taking into account its historical development. A focus can be placed on either the literary and cultural studies or the social sciences approach to Japan as a subject of study.

Jewish Studies

The Master degree program in Jewish Studies offers an interdisciplinary, subject-specific and research-oriented education, which, in addition to the subject-specific core area of "Jewish Studies", also offers profile formation in the areas of "Judaism and Islam" as well as "Holocaust Studies".

Korean Studies

The main focus of the Master's program Korean Studies is the social scientific examination of Korea in the East Asian context. The aim of the program in Korean Studies is to acquire and deepen academic and professional knowledge and skills in Korean and East Asian studies.

Ottoman Studies and Turcology

The contents of the master degree program are knowledge of the Turkish and Ottoman languages, an overview of the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, in-depth study of basic topics of Ottoman and Turkish history and present.

Prehistoric Archaeology

Prehistoric archaeology, as a basic science of early man, deals with his material legacies, social and economic forms of organization, as well as his artistic, symbolic and spiritual expressions of life, insofar as these have left lasting traces.

Public History

The new Master degree program Public History provides knowledge for the presentation of historical content and problems, especially in modern history (with a focus on 20th century history), in a way that is appropriate for the media and the public.

Religious Studies

The course program is designed to enable students to analyze and interpret cross-temporal and cross-spatial processes of transfer and transformation of religious ideas and practices in their cultural contexts.

Semitic Studies

The consecutive master degree program in Semitic Studies deepens the knowledge of languages, cultures and history of the societies of the Near East acquired in the Bachelor's program. It conveys the current international state of research in Semitic Studies and qualifies graduates for activities in various professional fields with a connection to the Near East.
