The Ancient Near Eastern Studies deal with the languages, history and culture of the ancient Near East from the beginning of the 4th millennium B.C. to the time of Hellenism. Chr. until the time of Hellenism. One goal of the education at Freie Universität is to enable students to understand texts in at least two ancient Near Eastern languages (Akkadian and Sumerian or Hittite) and to interpret them with regard to scientific problems.
Arabic Studies examine Arabic texts from pre-Islamic times to the present day - from the Koran to love poetry to gangsta rap.
Near Eastern Archaeology is dedicated to the archaeology of the ancient Near East. Geographically, the field of work extends from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Turkey and the Arabian Peninsula. Temporally, it covers the span from the beginnings of human settlement to the Islamic conquest, i.e. a total of about 10,000 years.
The course program deals with the art and visual cultures of Africa and the African diaspora. Historically, the focus is on the period from the 15th century to the present, with occasional examples from earlier eras.
The course provides knowledge of works of art from the cultures of China, Korea, and Japan from the Neolithic period to the present.
The course program provides fundamental knowledge to explore works of art from late antiquity to the present and the material and ideational conditions that lead to their creation.
The subject matter of Chinese studies is primarily the Chinese language, the examination of the society of contemporary China and the historical process of its formation, as well as the political, social, economic and cultural transformations in a globalizing environment. During the course of study, the Chinese language is learned as an essential part of the studies.
lassical Archaeology is dedicated to the legacies of the Greek and Roman cultures in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, and furthermore to artifacts of adjacent settlement areas that were related to these cultures. Basic knowledge of monuments, archaeological finds and features as well as methods and questions of Classical Archaeology, including stylistic criticism and stylistic analysis and the subsequent questions of the meaning and significance of what is depicted (iconography) are taught.
The subject of Egyptology is the ancient Egyptian culture from prehistory to Byzantine Egypt. The subject covers a wide range of geographical areas. Effects of the study of Egyptology are, in addition to grasping the different cultures of ancient Egypt, to fathom and learn to understand the other.
The science of history deals with the changes in society, economy, state, politics and culture that take place in the past and present. It is based, among other things, on the specificity of the respective sources and the techniques of their evaluation.
The program provides a comprehensive overview of the history and culture of the Islamic and Christian Near East from early times to the present. In the language courses, students acquire the ability to use original-language sources in an Oriental language corresponding to the chosen area of concentration, as well as basic knowledge of another Oriental language.
Islamic Studies researches Islamic societies in history and the present, but also deals with Muslim life in non-Muslim majority societies, including Europe. The focus is on normative sources and traditions, social, religious-legal and cultural structures.
The program deals with modern Japan, taking into account its historical development from a social science, cultural studies and history perspective. Special emphasis is placed on language training. This includes both comprehensive training in modern Japanese in speech and writing and, optionally, an introduction to the pre-modern linguistic styles of Japanese.
Jewish Studies at Freie Universität Berlin deals with the history and literature of Judaism in the geographical and cultural area of late antiquity as well as with the social and intellectual history of the late Middle Ages and modern times in Europe.
The subject of Korean Studies is modern Korea, taking into account its historical development. Students gain knowledge of the history of Korea from its beginnings to the present, an overview of the economy and political system of North and South Korea, and in-depth insights into the culture of Korea in addition to knowledge of the Korean high and contemporary language.
Turcology is the science of languages, literatures, history, religions and material cultures of Turkic peoples in the past and present. Turcology rests on the study of linguistic products and the acquisition of language skills. For understanding both languages and texts that form the literature of a language, historical-cultural knowledge also becomes necessary.
Prehistoric archaeology, as the science of early man, deals with his material remains, social and economic forms of organization, as well as his artistic, symbolic, and spiritual expressions of life, as far as these have left lasting traces.
Religious Studies at Freie Universität Berlin focus on the history of religion in the European, especially ancient Greek and Roman, tradition, although cultural traditions and actualizations of non-European scripture-less and scripture-centered religions may also be included.
Semitic Studies focus on the Semitic languages and cultures of the Near East as well as on the history and present situation of various religious minorities.
