As an Egyptologist, Ralph Birk is interested in the social, religious, and linguistic history of late modern and Greco-Roman Egypt. His research focuses on the Theban priesthood, their families and roles at Karnak, and the monuments associated with them. Thereby, issues of contextualization play a central role. The mainstay of this research is the processing and gradually editing of individual personal dossiers and their monuments. The statues from the Cachette of Karnak play an essential role in this context.

In addition, he has been working on quantitative approaches to data analysis, which he is testing on linguistic (Égyptien de Tradition) and archaeological data (private statue of Ptolemaic period) as part of a Math + project (EF 5-4) in a team. Methodologically, this will bridge the gap from isolated case studies to more systematic issues.

At the Einstein Center Chronoi he is involved in the project “The Epagomena Days and their Historical Dimention”, which aims at investigating liminal phases of the Egyptian understanding of time and their functional correspondences in religious and political contexts.
