Kevin White: Opportunity Knocks: Recent Discoveries and Challenges in Nestorian Christianity
In 2015 a farmer in Eastern Kazakhstan found a large stone bearing the image of a cross and Syriac script. This discovery and subsequent excavations uncovered the lost Silk Road Ilibalik, which the chronicler of Hethum I, King of Armenia, described as a city of Christians. Subsequent excavations have yielded over one hundred graves and counting along with evidences of a developed city. Estimated to be larger than Medieval Jerusalem, Ilibalik is still less than 1% excavated. We'll have a look at the extraordinary developments and finds discovered in Kazakhstan and their implications.
