More information about the test:

The test includes sections on grammar, reading, writing, and kanji. Answers should be handwritten. There is no sample test available.

Please note:

  • If you are not sure which level of the test is best for you, you can also take more than one test in order to find the course that is most suitable for you.
  • Also, the placement test is basically for students with prior knowledge of Japanese. The courses Japanese I, III and V are offered in the winter semester. Japanese II and IV are offered in the summer semester. The results of the placement test are valid for one year.
  • The placement test is typically administered to prospective students pursuing the BA Japanese Studies, Japanese module, and MA Japanese Studies. MAGEA students with prior Japanese language proficiency may also take the placement test, though it does not guarantee admission to a course.
