Information for prospective students


We welcome your interest in studying Classical Archaeology and hope to provide some useful information and opportunities to pursue your studies.

Classical Archaeology deals with the sites, artwork, and objects from the Greek and Roman cultures (about 1500 BC to 500 AD). At the Freie Universität you can study Classical Archaeology on undergraduate and on graduate levels.


As a "mono-bachelor" (= single-subject bachelor program)

The course Bachelor Altertumswissenschaften is a joint offer of the archaeologies at our university: Classical Archaeology, Prehistory, Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology (material culture or philology). Thus, students will cover some areas/aspects of all subjects and choose one focus area (e.g. Classical Archaeology).

As a 30 or 60-credit module in a combination bachelor program

This bachelor's degree program comprises a core subject (typically 90 credits) and one or two separate modules (one 60-credit module or two 30-credit modules).

On the graduate level we offer a consecutive four semester master program enabling our students to aquire a comprehensive expert knowledge and to expand methodological and analytical skills.

Doctoral Studies

The department of Classical Archaeology welcomes applications for doctoral studies from candidates with relevant degrees from other German or foreign Universities.

Yes and No.

German: The undergraduate program and the Master of Classical Archaeology is taught in German only. You are required to provide proof of your German skills during the application and enrollment process. Further information: German skills for application and enrollment for degree programs

English: The graduate program Master Archaeology of the Ancient World is a full-time master’s program taught in English. Further information on the program's website.

Either or other: The doctoral studies allows exceptions, please see there.

If you are holding a non-German university entrance qualification or earned your degree in a country other than Germany, you are required to apply via the online application portal uni-assist.

The undergraduate BA Altertumswissenschaften and the MA Klassische Archäologie are both programs with unrestricted admission (in German: zulassungsfreie Studiengänge). Non-restricted means that there won‘t be any specific selective application procedures. There are still, however, some fundamental requirements that candidates have to fulfill (see below), in order to be enrolled at the university.

If you are intending to study Classical Archaeology as a minor in a combination bachelor Candidates are applying for separate admittance to the core subject and module or modules, but students can only enroll for all of the components of the program together at the same time.

Admission to the MA Archaeology of the Ancient World is restrictes, please refer to the program's website.

For doctoral studies the institute has established an internal procedure, which you will find described below.

On the undergraduate level admission requirements include:

  • General university entrance qualifications (such as school leaving and university certificates)
  • Proof of English language skills at level B1 CER

English language skills at level B1 CER correspond to at least 5 years of English instruction in (a German) school. See also Section 2 under Language Requirement.

For the Master Klassische Archäologie admission requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in ancient history with a focus on classical archaeology or an equivalent university degree that corresponds in terms of content and structure to the program at Freie Universität Berlin.
  • Proof of language skills in Latin or ancient Greek (Latinum or Graecum or proof of equivalent level).
  • Proof of skills in a modern foreign language: English, French, or Italian (level B2 CEFR).

Assuming, you are holding an non-German university entrance qualification/degree, you are required to register via the online application portal uni-assist.

Enrollment periods are usually as follows:

BA Altertumswissenschaften - between beginning of July - end of August

Classical Archaeology as a minor - application (!) by July, 15.

Master programs - between mid-April - mid-May

Doctoral studies - any time
