The DOT was first convened by the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG) in Leipzig in 1921, and has since been established as the largest and most important event of German cultural studies on Africa and Asia. The conference is being held in intervals of three to five years at different universities. The Deutsche Orientalistentage are open to all German and foreign scholars; participation is not dependent on membership of the DMG.

For its 100th anniversary, the Deutsche Orientalistentag (DOT) is being held at the Freie Universität Berlin. From 12th to 17th September 2022, researchers and students share their ideas and findings in 24 thematic sections. Beatrice Gruendler, head of Arabic Studies and AnonymClassic PI, is part of the organizing committee at this 34th edition of the DOT, together with the faculty’s dean Eun-Jeung Lee (Korean Studies), Alberto Cantera Glera (Iranian Studies) and Shabo Talay (Semitic Studies)

Beatrice Gruendler and her team are hosting two thematic panels to showcase ongoing project work: "The Multiple Journeys of the Book of Kalīla wa-Dimna," chaired by Johannes Stephan and Khouloud Khalfallah, and featuring AnonymClassic project partner István Kristó-Nagy as a discussant; the Digital Humanities panel "Digital Workflows at Multiple Levels: Insights from the AnonymClassic Project," is being chaired by Theodore S. Beers.
