Reaching the People team outing to Berlin's Museum for Communication
News from Nov 19, 2019
The Reaching the People team took advantage of a recent trip to the Museum for Communication in Berlin's Mitte district to stimulate their thinking about the various ways in which shifts in communication have shaped the course of history. Alongside the permanent collection, which highlights the technological developments which have restructured the way in which we communicate, the team were treated to a temporary exhibition tracing the various social and political uses of the postcard during its 150-year history, as illustrated by a display of over 500 postcards including everything from those sent from the European colonies to those produced in Nazi Germany. Another exhibition traced the various ways in which changing styles of communication have shifted the meaning of friendship - in an ever more connected world, are we really closer to those around us? A highlight was the opportunity to meet the museum’s two friendly robots, although Lea assured the others that they had nothing on the cleaning robots she had observed at work in her hotel on a recent trip to China. Overall, it was a very enjoyable afternoon which provided plenty of food for thought!
