Europe and Asia Fighting COVID-19 Together: Mutual Lessons from the Pandemic Event Description For over a year and a half, the world has been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. While measures to manage the outbreak have ranged from strict lockdowns and closed borders up to the use of big data and artificial intelligence, on the whole, both North and South East Asia have fared generally better than Europe in terms of the number of cases, hospitalizations and fatalities. Yet now in the second phase when various vaccines have become available, many parts of Asia have been lagging behind Europe in their inoculation rates while new variants threaten to invade the countries where SARS-CoV-2 has virtually been non-existent. How can we explain the stark differences between both regions, Europe and Asia, and what mutual lessons can we learn from one another? What can Europe do to help vaccinate the world, including developing countries and those with restricted humanitarian access? What is the role for organizations, such as the European Commission and COVAX, and what measures can be adopted so that any future pandemic is prevented and its impact mitigated? Two panels of distinguished political scientists, economists, health experts and practitioners will debate mutual experiences in fighting COVID-19 from the European and Asian perspectives.

2021 Summer Special Lecture Series
The Contentious Koreans: Civil Society, Social Movements, and Human Rights Struggles in South Korea South Korea is a country rife with contention. Socio-political struggles that emanate from the people – and that thus do not exclusively take place in ‘traditional’ political arenas like the government or parliaments – are characteristic phenomena of South Korea’s modern history. The summer special lecture series focuses on central concepts like human and civil rights, social movements, and civil society. It will show how these actors and concepts played important roles in Korea after the liberation from Japanese colonial rule from 1945 onwards, as well as before and after democratization in the late 1980s. A general historical and conceptual overview of human rights struggles in South Korea will be complemented by lectures on concrete socio-political issues that have been relevant in modern and present-day Korea: the human rights situation of refugees and migrants, the environmental movement, feminist and LGBTIQ activism, activism against youth unemployment, and non-progressive mobilization in South Korea.

2021 KEC PhD Colloquia - Strategic Dialogue Workshop
Strategic dialogue has been a term used increasingly more frequently, both in private and public sectors. Nevertheless, what does "strategic dialogue" exactly mean? How does it differ from a regular "bilateral" or "multilateral" meeting? Is it a formal or informal discussion? How does it compare and contrast to 1.5 and 2-track discussions? Can academics participate in strategic dialogues, or is it a format limited to practitioners, mostly from the field of politics? Who sets the agenda? How is a strategic dialogue organized in practice? The one-day workshop will examine these and other questions covering the issue of strategic dialogue. The seminar will host speakers who have a rich experience from conducting such strategic dialogues with partners in Asia and, in particular, in both Koreas. The guest speakers will share their expertise and provide hands-on experiences. The seminar will be organized in a hybrid form (partly in person, partly online) and will be held under the Chatham House rule.
