Marleen de Witte, Utrecht University: Converted gods. Lives and travels of Asante abosom and asuman figures
You’re invited on a journey with a group of six Asante shrine figure, now held in the Dutch Afrika Museum. Their journey to the museum was a tortuous one, passing through the hands of West African spiritual entrepreneurs, colonial police, ‘tribal art’ dealers, Catholic missionaries, and secular museum staff. We will trace the lives and travels of these abosom (gods) and asuman (spirits/deities), taking them as an entry point into the complex entanglements of colonialism, missionary Christianity, West African indigenous religions, cultural heritage, and African art.
Der Vortrag findet im Rahmen des von Ferdinand de Jong geleiteteten Kolloquiums zur Kunst Afrikas statt.
