Sérgio B. Martins is a critic, art historian, and professor at the History Department at PUC-Rio de Janeiro. Prior to that, he obtained his Ph.D. at University College London and had his thesis published as the book Constructing an Avant-Garde: Art in Brazil, 1949-1979 (MIT Press, 2013). He guest-edited a special issue of Third Text entitled Bursting on the Scene: Looking back at Brazilian Art (January 2012) and published articles in various journals both in Brazil and internationally, such as October, ARTmargins, Artforum, Novos Estudos (CEBRAP) and Third Text. He also contributed to exhibition catalogues such as Cildo Meireles (Fundação Serralves and Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, 2013), Hélio Oiticica: to Organize Delirium (Carnegie Museum, Art Institute of Chicago and Whitney Museum, 2016), Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture (Tate Modern, 2015), Anna Maria Maiolino (MoCA Los Angeles, 2017) and Lygia Pape: a Multitude of Forms (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). 

Martins currently holds a CAPES/Humboldt Senior Fellowship at Freie Universität Berlin, where he is researching the trajectory of Brazilian artist Antonio Dias in the period between 1967 and 1978, when he lived in Milan and exhibited extensively in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. His research will result in a book focused on "Dias's unique perspective on the emergence of Conceptualism in Europe."
