The Nature of the Nation
Studies on the Intellectual History of the German Forest
1800-1945

From the early 19th century on, intellectual movements in the German speaking countries increasingly inscribed the natural entity of the forest with cultural, political, and societal meanings. Its alleged principles of stability, hierarchy, and inequality thus functioned as an explicit antipode against the political system of the French Revolution 1789 and the corresponding values of liberty and equality.

As a result, intellectuals and ideologues proclaimed the 'German Forest' to be the prototype of national nature. At the same time, the ‘German Oak’ grew to become the symbol of a shared history and culture. In accordance with the slogan 'the forest as an educator', the ideologists also made the nature of the forest an encompassing utopian blueprint and the leading paradigm for the political and societal sphere. Furthermore, a memorable imagery of rootedness was used for antisemitic purposes by contrasting the German 'forest people' with a Jewish 'desert people'.

Therefore, the imagined 'German Forest' could serve as the ideological token for a broad set of anti-modernist, nationalist, racist, and biologist patterns of thought: as the opposite to progress and metropolis, as the Germanic origin and German 'heimat', as the pagan temple and rootage of race, as the role model for the stratified 'volksgemeinschaft' and vision of a hierarchical state. Such an ideal landscape could however become historically powerful as soon as it was deployed to legitimize societal and political objectives.

Referring to Benedict Anderson’s work on 'imagined communities' and Simon Schama’s theory of 'nature as imagination', the PhD project combines intellectual and environmental history to conceptualize the 'German Forest' as an 'imagined landscape'. With a focus on exemplary intellectual protagonists, it then analyzes the ideological facets of the 'German Forest' between 1800 and 1945. Thus, a heterogenous figment of thought is delineated which could comprise the consecration of a romantic landscape as well as the justification of National Socialist rule. A concluding epilogue treats the legacy of German forest thought up to the debates about the 'waldsterben'.
