Richard Drayton recipient of Humboldt Research Award
Richard Drayton, King’s College London, will join the Berlin Global History group as the recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Research Award. He will be in Berlin from August, 2021 through July, 2022 in order to work on his project "Europe’s Hinterlands and its ‘Blue Water’ Empires”. European expansion was a Pan-European enterprise, even if mainly under Iberian, Dutch, French, or British flags. But while these are usually only addressed as discrete competitive enterprises, Drayton proposes a new focus on trans-European economic and cultural flows, and on how Europe's hinterlands participated in, and were transformed by, its 'Blue Water' empires.
