Research
Research at the institute focuses on the social, political and cultural aspects of China’s transformation from a traditional agrarian society to an industrial and service society, taking into consideration the increasing internationalisation of China with the opportunities and risks this represents.
The key research areas are examined through the multidisciplinary lens of cultural and social history. China Studies at Freie Universität Berlin are characterised by proficiency in the Chinese language combined with area-specific research anchored in the humanities and social sciences. The main focus is on China, its interaction and interconnections in the region, as well as on the historical origins of the processes which can be seen today.
