Palestinian Press in the Diaspora: The Case of Chile with Dr. Heba El Attar
This event is part of our Mighty Magazines Online Series.
About the event
This talk will focus on the Palestinian immigrant community in Chile which is one of the largest outside the Middle East. The press has been one of several cultural forums they have cultivated. For a century, their communal press played a key role in helping the community integrate in the host society without losing its cultural heritage. Two main publications stood out in that process: La reforma/Mundo Árabe, which survived against all odds throughout the twentieth century, and Al Damir which decisively took over in the twenty first century, namely after the Second Intifada. Not only did the Palestinian diaspora in Chile succeed in establishing a solid communal press but also Palestinian Chilean journalists stood out in mainstream journalism as is the case of Faride Zerán who was awarded the National Prize of Journalism in Chile for the year 2007.
