General Information
The Art History Department of Freie Universität is one of the largest in Germany, not only in the number of professorships but also in the size of its library. The Department is dedicated to the full spectrum of art history studies, from late Antiquity up to the present, but also goes beyond the traditionally accepted limits of European art history. By focussing on the specific historiography and contextualisation of selected cultures, art history is taught in a supraregional perspective. It is possible to specialise in Far Eastern Art History or in South Asian Art History. The extensive choice of study courses is further enriched by a close cooperation with Berlin's local museums and institutions for historic preservation, as well as by numerous honorary professors and visiting lecturers. The international orientation of teaching and research is supported by partnerships with the many institutions belonging to the the Erasmus Program, which enables our students to study abroad. Numerous research projects based in our Department as well as national and international cooperative research projects exemplify current art history research.
