I completed my first degree in History at the University of Cambridge followed by a master’s in International History and Politics at the Graduate Institute, Geneva (IHEID). While in Geneva I joined Prof. Michael Goebel’s SNSF funded project Patchwork Cities as a research assistant and will continue to work on this project as a doctoral student in Berlin. In addition to the project's subject matter of ethnic segregation in port cities, my own work is concerned with the history of empire, race and nationalism in modern Southeast Asia. My master’s thesis looked at the Straits Chinese community of colonial Malaya and their positioning between the British and Chinese Empires around 1900 and was awarded a prize by the Geneva-Asia Association. I am particularly interested in how the social and cultural history, especially of cities, informed and impacted the main political and intellectual trends of the Straits Settlements to better understand how nationalism was affected by everyday experiences of cosmopolitanism. More broadly, I am interested in the history of empires, anticolonialism, migration, globalization and the environment as well as having a longstanding passion for the history of Brazil.
