Panel: Sounds German II: Sound, Text, and Music in German Literature

This panel will examine the multiple links between text and sound in
German literature and culture. The nature of the relationship between
text, sound, music, and poetology is conceived of as the central
avenue of inquiry for this session. Possible topics of interest
include the performative aspect of text as something spoken and heard,
the musical nature of poetic language, insights from auditory biology
into aesthetic investigations, research intersections between
musicology and literary studies, investigations into the mimetic
function of poetry, literary depictions of instrumental music and the
voice, recent scholarship within German Studies that focuses on the
auditory realm, and pedagogical suggestions for bringing the sound of
texts into the classroom.

The Northeast Modern Language Association will meet in Toronto,
Ontario, for its 46th annual convention. Every year, this event
affords NeMLA’s principal opportunity to carry on a tradition of
lively research and pedagogical exchange in language and literature.
This year’s convention will include roundtable and caucus meetings,
workshops, literary readings, film screenings, and guest speakers.
