A specific Ottoman maqâm developed between the second half of 14th century and the first half of 19th century and is modal, microtonal, monophonic, eterophonic, and based on complex rhythmic cycles. Apart the elaborate system of oral transmission (meşk), a peculiar feature of Ottoman maqâm is given by the several musical notation systems that developed throughout the centuries and, therefore, the great number of musical compositions coming from the past along with their author, so that it is possible an historical approach to Ottoman art music.
