Lektüre und Diskussion von Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff: Was ist eine attische Tragödie?

Seventeen years after the famous debate over Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy, Wilamowitz published his edition of Euripides’ Herakles 1889, prefaced with an introduction “Was ist eine attische Tragödie?” The text, which would become a standard reference for later scholars, offers a largely non-theological and non-philosophical approach to the genre. Against the background of the Birth of Tragedy debate, we will read the text closely to understand 1.) Wilamowitz’s perspective on the origins of tragedy and its relation to cult; 2.) his discussion of tragedy’s worldview and the role of the gods within it; 3.) his attitude toward Euripides and the Euripidean gods, especially in the Herakles’s astonishing deus ex machina (815-74).
