Yoon’s Upcoming Presidency in South Korea: Domestic & International Implications

In the midst of great geopolitical challenges, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but also an ongoing global pandemic, South Korea held its presidential elections on March 9. The outcome has been impacting the country’s image in the region, and shaping its relations with its neighbors as well as with its like-minded partners, including the United States and the European Union. Taiwan sits at the heart of the Indo-Pacific, a region that has gained global relevance, where both Korea and Taiwan, as like-minded democracies and technologically advanced economies, face similar challenges, but also opportunities for greater cooperation. In light of an existential threat from the People’s Republic of China, Taipei has made the diversification of its partnerships key to its prosperity and survival. Similarly, with the North Korean regime threatening to undermine regional peace and stability, Seoul has maintained focus on international cooperation. Yet, with tensions and authoritarian threats rising on a global scale, the need to build up democratic resilience through cooperation, as well as mutual understanding, has never been greater. In the domestic context, gender relations stood at the core of the electoral contest. For the first time, clear gender fault lines emerged among younger voters, further exacerbating the issues of anti-feminism and gender discrimination in South Korea. Mindful of these dynamics in the regional and global context, 9DASHLINE, Taiwan NextGen Foundation and the Korea Europe Center at Free University of Berlin wish to invite you to a discussion on the implications of South Korea’s recent presidential elections and the upcoming Yoon presidency.
