Buddhist prayers for the withdrawal of Japanese pirates and the State Protecting Buddhist Rituals during the late Koryŏ

Lukáš Kubík, Lecturer

(Charles University, Institute of Asian Studies, Prague Center for Korean Studies)

Lecture

One of the essential objectives of Buddhist rituals during the late Koryŏ period was preserving the state. Various rituals were orchestrated to protect the state from foreign military incursions and bolster the Koryŏ army's resistance against invaders. In this lecture, I will discuss the state protecting Buddhist rituals in the context of the sudden surge of Japanese pirate raids in 1350.
