Park Young-I, Director of “The Sky‐Blue Symphony: The Story of The Korean Schools in Japan(2016)”
Park Yeong-I is a third-generation Zainichi Korean living in Japan. He was schooled for 16 years at a “Chosun school”, a type of school providing Zainichi Korean students with a “national” or “ethnic”, i.e. “Chosun (Korean)”, education (minjok kyoyuk). Following his graduation from film school, he made several documentary films, of which “The Sky‐Blue Symphony: The Story of The Korean Schools in Japan (2016)” is the most widely known. In between 1991 and 2019, Park visited North Korea for a total number of 21 times. His visits were not restricted to the capital, Pyongyang, but included trips to rural areas in the provinces of Hwanghae, Kangwon, and Phyongan.
In his lecture, Park Young-I will tell us about the school life of North Korean students by comparing it with the school life of students attending Chosun schools in Japan.
