The lecture explores the processes of democratic transition, consolidation, and deepening in South Korea, with a specific emphasis on the pivotal role played by civil society. It traces the historical evolution of civil society in South Korea, comparing its characteristics before and after democratization, analyzing its current status, and examining the challenges it faces in the future.

Prof. Dr Sunhyuk Kim (Korea University)
Sunhyuk Kim is a Professor in the Department of Public Administration at Korea University. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Stanford University, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on civil society in South Korean democratization. His research interests include democratization, democracy, civil society, and social movements. Some of his most recent positions include Chair of the Department of Urban and Local Administration at the Graduate School of Policy Studies at Korea University and Vice President for International Affairs at Korea University.
