Im Rahmen der Special Lecture Series "Korean Politics Today" (SoSe 2013) wird am 3. Mai Herr Woosang Kim, der Präsident der Korea Foundation, einen Vortrag mit dem Titel “Korea’s Soft Power Diplomacy in Global Era” halten.

Surrounded by great powers’ sphere of influence geopolitically, Korea needs to maintain a strong military alliance with the US and an economic strategic partnership with China. In addition, Korea’s active middle power engagement in various human security issues with other like-minded middle powers in multilateral settings will provide Korea’s more balanced foreign policy environment.

A middle power country must have enough capabilities to meaningfully influence regional affairs, and at the same time, have the intention of actively engaging in regional and global affairs for peaceful resolutions in international disputes, facilitating multilateral solutions to global issues, and demonstrating “good international citizenship.” Recently Korea has played meaningful middle power leadership roles in the global society. Korea’s integration into the global economy, its emergence as a democratic state, and its increasing importance in the global society are recognized.

Public diplomacy becomes a very effective measure to create better diplomatic environment for Korea’s close ties with other like-minded middle power countries in the long-term. One of the best ways of carrying out our public diplomacy is to play the middle power leadership role in the global society.

 

Herr Kim ist von Hause aus Politikwissenschaftler. Er erhielt 1988 seine Doktorwürde von der Rochester Universität (USA). Nach einer Zahl von Lehraufträgen an US-amerikanischen Universitäten ging er zurück nach Südkorea, wo er zunächst an der Sookmyung Universität und später an der Yonsei Universität als Professor Politik lehrte. In den Jahren 1999, 2000 und 2003 war er Mitglied des Beratergremiums des Nationalen Sicherheitsrates der Regierung und später auch anderer hochrangiger Regierungseinrichtungen. Seit März 2012 bekleidet Herr Woosang Kim das Amt des Präsidenten der Korea Foundation.
