On Wednesday, April 18 2012, Prof. Dr. John Lie, C.K. Cho Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and currently a guest researcher at the Institute of Korean Studies (IKS) at Freie Universität Berlin, will give a presentation at our institute titled "What is the ‚K‘ in K-Pop?“. Prof. Lie, whowas born in South Korea and grew up in Japan and in Hawaii, attended Harvard University where he received A.B. magna cum laude in Social Studies in 1982 and Ph.D. in Sociology in 1988. He has published intensively on different aspects and topics with regard to Korea. His latest books include “Blue Dreams: Korean Americans and the Los Angeles Riots” (co-authored, Harvard University Press, 1995), “Han Unbound: The Political Economy of South Korea” (Stanford University Press, 1998), “Multiethnic Japan” (Harvard University Press, 2001), and “Modern Peoplehood” (Harvard University Press, 2004) and “Zainichi: Diasporic Nationalism and Postcolonial Identity” (University of California Press, 2008).
