Am 5. – 7. September 2024 findet am Institut für Japanologie der Freien Universität eine Konferenz zu Formen der Gewaltausübungen durch das japanische Militär während des Zweiten Weltkrieges in Ost- und Südostasien statt (Programm siehe unten).

 

Im Zentrum stehen die vielfältigen Formen, durch die Gewalt ausgeübt wurde, sei es durch konventionelle militärische Mittel, mit neuen Technologien (Städtebombardierungen, biologische und chemische Kampfstoffe) oder vermittels struktureller Gewalt (Nahrungs- und Finanzpolitik). Ebenso beleuchtet die Konferenz die Pluralität der Akteure (wie z.B. Militärjuristen oder Übersetzer), die direkt oder indirekt an der Gewaltausübung beteiligt waren, oder diese erlitten (wie z.B. die Bewohner von Okinawa oder Opfer sexueller Gewalt) und diskutiert die Frage, inwiefern japanische Militärgewalt in diesen Formen eine Besonderheit im Kontext des Zweiten Weltkrieges war und wie diese heute noch erinnert wird. Die Konferenz ist als eine Bestandsaufnahme unseres heutigen Wissens über japanische Militärgewalt im Zweiten Weltkrieg gedacht und soll neue Forschungswege zu diesem schwierigen und heiklen Komplex aufzeigen. Die Konferenz findet vor Ort statt (nicht hybrid), eine Anmeldung ist erforderlich (siehe unten).

 

Organisiert wird die Fachtagung vom Institut für Japanologie der Freien Universität Berlin im Rahmen des Projekts „Law without Mercy: Japanese Courts-Martial and Military Courts During the Asia-Pacific War, 1937–1945“ (Recht ohne Gnade: Japanische Standgerichte und Militärgerichte im Asiatisch-Pazifischen Krieg, 1937–1945), das vom Europäischen Forschungsrat (ERC) der Europäischen Union mit einem ERC Grant gefördert wird.
