David Wolffsohn (1856/58-1914). Mitbegründer der Zionistischen Weltorganisation,
Nachfolger Theodor Herzls, Wegbereiter des Staates Israel 

Der Kölner Geschäftsmann David Wolffsohn (1856/1858 – 1914) folgte dem berühmten Be-
gründer des politischen Zionismus, Theodor Herzl, im Jahr 1905 als Zweiter der Präsidenten
der Zionistischen Weltorganisation. Während sich der Name Theodor Herzls allgemeiner Be-
kanntheit erfreut, ist derjenige seines Freundes und Mitstreiters David Wolffsohn heute weit-
gehend vergessen.

Ziel dieses Dissertationsprojekts ist es, die Bedeutung Wolffsohns für das Gelingen des zio-
nistischen Projekts, verstanden als Aufbau einer tatkräftigen und entwicklungsfähigen Orga-
nisation mit dem Ziel, einen jüdischen Staat in Palästina zu gründen, herauszuarbeiten. Da
mit werden die Vorgeschichte und die ersten zwei Jahrzehnte der zionistischen Bewegung
beleuchtet und die Probleme, die Differenzen und auch die Funktionsweise des zunächst
utopisch erscheinenden Projekts einer Nationswerdung dargestellt.

Der zeitliche Rahmen der Studie, die sich an der Biographie Wolffsohns als methodischem
und chronologischem Ansatzpunkt orientiert, ist zwischen 1892 und 1914 festzusetzen. Ne-
ben der biografischen Herangehensweise werden in methodischer Hinsicht auch Netzwerk-
theorien und Überlegungen zu transnationaler Geschichte berücksichtigt werden.

Theodor Herzl’s successor, pioneer of the state of Israel

David Wolffsohn was a businessman from Cologne - and the successor of Theodor Herzl,
the famous founder of political Zionism, whom he succeeded in leading the Zionist Organi-
zation as its president in 1905.

The name of Theodor Herzl is widely known, while the name of his friend and fellow David
Wolffsohn is mostly forgotten.

My dissertation project aims at analyzing Wolffsohn’s key role within the Zionist Organization.
As David Wolffsohn was involved in many of the initial projects of the organization, as well as
in several predecessor organizations, he represents an excellent paradigm for explaining how
early Zionism started off. Thus my study provides insight into the prehistory and the first two
decades of the Zionist movement. Essential ideas, problems and differences are being ana-
lyzed to show how this unique project of creating a national state, which in the beginning was
seeming entirely utopian, came to work and how the organization developed into a vital and
influential force. The timeframe of this study, which uses Wolffsohn’s biography as a metho-
dological and chronological guiding principle, is fixed between the years 1892 and 1914. Al-
though my approach is broadly a biographical one, as is required when dealing with a his-
torical person, theory of network and transnational references are also playing a decisive
role.
